Dr. Toh Tin Lam has been with St. Andrew’s Junior College from 1995 to 2001 and he was the Head of Department from 2000 to 2001, before joining the NIE as an assistant professor in the Mathematics Department in 2001. He was a member of the JC MTC Website Committee and a deputy leader of Singapore IMO Team.
OBJECTIVES
To reinforce the mathematics concepts learnt in the schools curriculum by using a problem based learning approach.
To promote a positive perception of learning Mathematics and to provide opportunities to engage in teamwork and good habits of mind, which include creative thinking, critical thinking and reflective thinking.
Enhance students’ appreciation of lower secondary school topics, thereby preparing them more adequately for the O level non-routine problems.
FEATURES
A programme emphasising on topics such as “Arithmetic” and “Elementary Algebra”.
Students would be introduced to different ways to solve non-routine problems by applying the 13 heuristics that they have learnt to handle non-routine mathematical problems
Students would derive useful mathematical formulae from different perspectives.
The methods of approach range from the most concrete approach (by seeing concrete objects in a non-routine way) to slightly more abstract approach (strategies and techniques in handling non-routine problems).
