Dr. Toh Tin Lam has been with St. Andrew’s Junior College from 1995 to 2001 and he was the Head of Department from 2000 to 2001, before joining the NIE as an assistant professor in the Mathematics Department in 2001. He was a member of the JC MTC Website Committee and a deputy leader of Singapore IMO Team.
OBJECTIVES
To enthuse and equip Secondary One or Two students with the essential skills in algebra so as to prepare them for their Secondary Two or Three Mathematics syllabus.
To promote a positive perception of learning Mathematics and to provide opportunities to engage in teamwork and good habits of mind, which include creative thinking, critical thinking and reflective thinking.
FEATURES
For Lower Achieving Students
Emphasising on linking the concrete and abstract concept of algebraic factorisation, expansion and completion of squares by allowing students to be involved in some hands-on and visualisation activities.
Help students to identify the conditions under which a quadratic expression can be factorised by the conditions of the coefficients of the quadratic expressions. Students should be able to recall the basic factorisation of simple quadratic expressions and then proceed to discover that not all quadratic expressions can be factorised by the trial-and-error factorisation. Simple quadratic word problems would also be included.
For Higher Achieving Students
To recognise the nature of the roots of a quadratic equation by the conditions of the coefficients of the quadratic expressions and to factorise higher order polynomials using the techniques of quadratic expressions through a series of discovery activities.
