Dr. Yeap Ban Har is presently a lecturer at the NIE. He was previously a head of department at a local secondary school. He has taught students in various streams, both in primary and secondary schools. Dr. Yeap holds a Master of Education and a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education. His current research interest focuses on problem solving, problem posing and thinking skills. He has been conducting workshops for teachers in Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand and the United States of America ("U.S.A."). He has authored many conference papers and written chapters for several books. He is also the author of several books for primary and pre-school children.
OBJECTIVES
Reinforce the concepts learnt in the school’s curriculum by using a problem-based learning approach.
Customised to cover the topics that students have difficulties in.
Presented with problems in a light-hearted manner through quizzes, trails and games.
Highlight to students the practical value of concepts and their applications to “real life” scenarios.
Promote students’ creativity.
FEATURES
Students are invited to a day camp to train them to be wizards.
Students would have to undergo a sorting ceremony to be sorted into their houses. These houses would be competing for the House Championship.
Triumphs would earn student house points. At the end of the camp, the house with the most points would be awarded the House Cup.
STRUCTURE
First Touch (1 Hour)
Start-off interaction among students before the commencement of the camp. The facilitator will brief the students on the objectives of the camp and the scoring system (which places high emphasis on team spirit).
The Camp (8 Hours)
Ratio of 1 facilitator to 15 to 20 students to ensure that ensure students’ safety and welfare are properly looked after. Students will compete in various activities.
