| OUTLINE OF TOPICS |
 |
PS001
Little Kids, Big Maths: Developing Strong Foundation in Maths in Fun Ways (3 Hours)
- Help young children develop a strong foundation in mathematics in ways that are enjoyable for both children and parents.
- Parents would be engaged in a range of activities that they would be able to use with their own children.
- Activities were developed based on how children learn in a positive and encouraging environment.
- Activities include those that use different types of intelligences - some that involve integration with art, language and science, as well as others that incorporate creative and critical thinking.
PS002
Helping Your Child Prepare for the PSLE Mathematics Examination (3 Hours
- Familiarise parents with the requirements of the Primary School Leaving Examination (“PSLE”). Share with parents many ways to help prepare their children for this major examination with different learning styles understand mathematics ideas.
- Parents would get to know that there are different types of tasks to be completed during the examination and that there are different ways to help their children attain a certain level of competency in these different tasks.
- Highlight the ways to help high achieving children, average children and children who are struggling with mathematics.
PS003
Help Your Kids Develop Positive Habits of Mind (3 Hours)
- Help parents develop good thinking in their children. Such habits of mind will translate into ability to handle unusual situations.
- Parents will learn how to help their children understand a problem and go through a solution process.
- Aims to offer insights into how parents can play a long-term role in the development of their children's thinking.
- The seminar will use mathematics problems as a basis for discussion.
PS004
Problem Solving Heuristics for Primary Maths (3 Hours)
- Help parents to identify ways to help their children in handling problems about the changing nature of mathematics problems which are required to solve in school .
- Focus on the use of the ‘model approach’, a method that is widely taught in Singapore schools.
- For a one-session seminar, the model method and a few increasingly common heuristics would be covered. Suggestions on how to help children who are not so adept at the model method and what questions to ask their children when they run into difficulties would be given.
- For a two-session seminar, there would be opportunities for more work on the model method and the use of all the other heuristics in the syllabus.
- The essential difference between the one-session and the two-session seminar is that the one-session seminar covers the common and essential heuristics in the local examination while the two-session seminar includes all heuristics in the syllabus, including those that are less common in typical examination papers.
